Art Brut fribourgeois

  • The canton of Fribourg (Switzerland) boasts a wealth of Art Brut creators who have rejected canonical artistic precepts: their unusual productions—paintings, sculptures, drawings—dismiss the rules of figuration and representation. During the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, this canton's trademark economic, political, religious and cultural context triggered the creation of works in a cleverly and boldly against-the-tide spirit. The fanciful visions of these Canton of Fribourg creators featured in this book move and intrigue us with the primal ideas that they convey, and with their release of an impulsive and archaic act deeply rooted in human thought.
A book published in conjunction with the Art Brut fribourgeois exhibition at the Collection de l'Art Brut, Lausanne, from February 6 through September 27, 2009.
