Meeting on fanzines and other publications - Musée de la Création Franche , Bègles (France)
23 November 2013 – Musée de la Création Franche
Publications that delve into the sources and resources of art brut. A territory that boasts a wealth of unresearched treasures.
The concept of art brut encompasses otherness not only through works, but also through ways of thinking, writing and publishing art. Jean Dubuffet's experimentation with "brut writing" was followed, during the 1980s, by highly original and often off-the-record publications, launched by creators, enthusiasts or art brut fans of highly differing temperaments. Providing information as well as food for debate, and creativity, by now fanzines have become an indispensable source of research in the realm of art brut.
Les Écrits bruts (brut writings) : when writing is crazy - A lecture by Vincent Capt and Florence Choquard
Thursday November 14, 2013 - 7 pm - Palais de Rumine - Sénat Room
Reinventing language as an outlet.
The texts presented in this lecture have been produced for the most part by persons confined to a psychiatric hospital.
In his lecture, Vincent Capt invites us to join the singular adventure these writings represent, brimming as they do with linguistic pearls and neologisms, such as the Collection de l'Art Brut of Lausanne has preserved for us. Reviewing writings that run the gamut from Samuel Daiber to Justine Python, this researcher will unveil worlds that shatter language into pieces.
Florence Choquard in turn will consider the history and genesis of this body of writings as autobiographical, scientific and esthetic objects. Located at the crossroads of various fields of knowledge, her lecture will touch upon the relations between patients and caretakers, most particularly between Eugénie Nogarède and the psychiatrist Hans Steck at Cery Psychiatric Hospital (1927-1951).

Aloïse and Laure Pigeon. From Writings to Images - A lecture by Pascale Marini and Lise Maurer
Thursday October 3, 2013 - 7 pm - Palais de Rumine - Auditorium
Aloïse and Laure Pigeon, or two creators confronting writing and imagery.
The lecture promises to shed light on the work of these two major Art Brut creators, each of whom links writing with drawing.
Aloïse began by writing out part of her life story before going on to add drawing and color to the pages, so that the text turned into captions evoking the creator's cosmogonic universe. Laure Pigeon's oeuvre, with a wealth of 500 drawings, is closely related to her spiritualistic practices. In a state of trance, she resorted to blue or black ink to draw abstract figures within a system of complex and finely lined traceries. Her drawings, kept hidden from sight, contain prophetic messages she considered to be endowed with mediumistic qualities.

The Richard Greaves site is slowly waning
Mario del Curto visited the Richard Greaves site eight times in order to come up with Richard Greaves anarchitecte, as he titled both his book on this creator and an exhibition curated by Sarah Lombardi and Valérie Rousseau, as well as a film created jointly with Philippe Lespinasse. His visits date from 2001 thru February 2013. In 2009, Richard Greaves paid tribute to his own creed —"We never possess, all is in the making"—by taking leave of his territory. In the meantime, he fathered a little girl, now four years old. He lives with his new lady friend a few dozen kilometers outside of Rang Chausse Gros (Quebec), remaining as ever close to his beloved trees, water and earth.
The rediscovery of a site at St Romain la Motte near Roanne (department of Loire, central France)
It was Pierre Martelanche, a Loire region humanist and wine grower, who created this site early in the 20th century. Fashioned out of clay, the site's allegorical figures, columns, towers, and bas-reliefs are so many love declarations to the Republic, to human rights, to secularism and to progress.
Marteleche was rejected by his contemporaries, who considered him "mad" throughout his lifetime.

The Collection de l'Art Brut's Stand on Creators: an interview with Sarah Lombardi
For his master's thesis at the Ecole Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne (ECAL), Nicolas Pahlish interviews Sarah Lombardi.
The Collection de l'Art Brut follows strict lines that bring to the fore the fact that Art Brut creators should not in principle stem from any cultural channel (art gallery, museum) whatsoever. In this interview, Sarah Lombardi defines the institution's position with respect to such creators and brings to light a certain number of paradoxes.

Research directors : Gérard Dessons (Paris 8) and Jean-Michel Adam (Lausanne).
