Under the title La Manie épistolaire [a mania for letter-writing], Vincent Capt will be defending his thesis on May 4, at the University of Paris 8. His subject matter comprises an analysis of the text and poetics of letters written by patients of psychiatric institutions and preserved at the Collection de l'Art Brut. His work addresses the conditions underlying a dialogue with insanity: the transition from a mania (where form equals symptom) to a manner where form is so individualized that it drives us up the wall— that is, it muddles our conventional reading categories (linguistic signs, type of discourse...), highlighting our linguistic ethnocentrism and shifting insanity into society. Hosted since April 19, 2012, by the data base of the Swiss Institute for the Study of Art, the resulting catalogue can be consulted under www.aloise-corbaz.ch. Two major exhibitions on Aloïse—Aloïse.
