They will speak upon the occasion of  a day devoted to dreams at the University of Lausanne, Institut de Psychologie, in the Bâtiment Geopolis, on April 30th at 10am

Dreams can be considered as go-betweens, straddling  the nocturnal and diurnal worlds, the Subconscious and the Conscious. As such, we might think of them as a main focus point in the process of artistic creation, as seen in the works of the creators themselves and, also, in the words of those called upon to comment on them and explain their underlying process—most especially, art historians and psychoanalysts. Seen in this light, creation can be likened to a laboratory providing access to processes leading to dreams and their developments in our psychological life and, beyond that,  to their translation into artistic production. This is what we shall endeavor to show in our two-voice approach to the oeuvre of the Art Brut creators Guo Fengyi and Ataa Oko.

Hans Steck (1891-1980), a Swiss psychiatrist and professor of medicine, took great interest in the creations produced by his patients, specially by those at the Psychiatric Hospital of Cery, where he began working in 1920, and where he was later (1936) appointed director. He played a major role in the discovery of the oeuvre of Aloïse, a patient confined to La Rosière (Gimel) , an annex of Cery. It was the visual quality of Aloïse's work, its esthetic impact, that Hans Steck came to appreciate in her production.

"La Manie épistolaire" : Vincent Capt defends his thesis at the University of Paris 8

04.05.2012
Under the title La Manie épistolaire [a mania for letter-writing], Vincent Capt will be defending his thesis on May 4, at the University of Paris 8. His subject matter comprises an analysis of the text and poetics of letters written by patients of psychiatric institutions and preserved at the Collection de l'Art Brut.
His work addresses the conditions underlying a dialogue with insanity: the transition from a mania (where form equals symptom) to a manner where form is so individualized that it drives us up the wall— that is, it muddles our conventional reading categories (linguistic signs, type of discourse...), highlighting our linguistic ethnocentrism and shifting insanity into society.
