« L’Art Brut et la fièvre créatrice tardive » [Art Brut and the creative fervor late in life] - a lecture by Mali Genest

07.02.2014
It is at a relatively late age—at times upon their retirement, when they have more time available—that many creators of Art Brut first get/got started in the field. Self-taught, these people are cut off from fashion or institutional art circles. Instead, they seek to fashion an entirely personal world that pays no heed whatsoever to outside opinions: theirs is a thoroughly unsociable, magic and even subversive world.
Ms. Genest's lecture will dwell on works by Ataa Oko, Emile Ratier, Marguerite Sirvins, and Helga Goetze.

"Grand écart sur les écrits" [Spanning the Writings] - A CrAB (art brut collective) Seminar

01.02.2014
Grand écart sur les écrits
Brut writings: from their psychiatric origins to contemporary practice.
A morning gathering set up to examine the "span" of brut writings.  It entails an historical approach that is inseparable from a spatial schema: from a psychiatric exclusion contained within four walls to that carved into the very walls of the housing developments or else transposed into poetry. Be that as it may, it is society and its institutions as a whole that such writing practices knowingly question.

Meeting on fanzines and other publications - Musée de la Création Franche , Bègles (France)

23.11.2013
23 November 2013 – Musée de la Création Franche
Publications that delve into the sources and resources of art brut. A territory that boasts a wealth of unresearched treasures.
The concept of art brut encompasses otherness not only through works, but also through ways of thinking, writing and publishing art. Jean Dubuffet's experimentation with "brut writing" was followed, during the 1980s, by highly original and often off-the-record publications, launched by creators, enthusiasts or art brut fans of highly differing temperaments. Providing information as well as food for debate, and creativity, by now fanzines have become an indispensable source of research in the realm of art brut.

Les Écrits bruts (brut writings) : when writing is crazy - A lecture by Vincent Capt and Florence Choquard

14.11.2013
Thursday November 14, 2013 - 7 pm  -  Palais de Rumine  -  Sénat Room
Reinventing language as an outlet.
The texts presented in this lecture have been produced for the most part by persons confined to a psychiatric hospital.
In his lecture, Vincent Capt invites us to join the singular adventure these writings represent, brimming as they do with linguistic pearls and neologisms, such as the Collection de l'Art Brut of Lausanne has preserved for us. Reviewing writings that run the gamut from Samuel Daiber to Justine Python, this researcher will unveil worlds that shatter language into pieces.
Florence Choquard in turn will consider the history and genesis of this body of writings as autobiographical, scientific and esthetic objects. Located at the crossroads of various fields of knowledge, her lecture will touch upon the relations between patients and caretakers, most particularly between Eugénie Nogarède and the psychiatrist Hans Steck at Cery Psychiatric Hospital (1927-1951).

Aloïse and Laure Pigeon. From Writings to Images - A lecture by Pascale Marini and Lise Maurer

03.10.2013
Thursday October 3, 2013 - 7 pm  -  Palais de Rumine  -  Auditorium
Aloïse and Laure Pigeon,
or two creators confronting writing and imagery.
The lecture promises to shed light on the work of these two major Art Brut creators, each of whom links writing with drawing.
Aloïse began by writing out part of her life story before going on to add drawing and color to the pages, so that the text turned into captions evoking the creator's cosmogonic universe. Laure Pigeon's oeuvre, with a wealth of 500 drawings, is closely related to her spiritualistic practices. In a state of trance, she resorted to blue or black ink to draw abstract figures within a system of complex and finely lined traceries. Her drawings, kept hidden from sight, contain prophetic messages she considered to be endowed with mediumistic qualities.

The Richard Greaves site is slowly waning

13.08.2013
Mario del Curto visited the Richard Greaves site eight times in order to come up with Richard Greaves anarchitecte, as he titled both his book on this creator and an exhibition curated by Sarah Lombardi and Valérie Rousseau, as well as a film created jointly with Philippe Lespinasse. His visits date from 2001 thru February 2013. In 2009, Richard Greaves paid tribute to his own creed —"We never possess, all is in the making"—by taking leave of his territory. In the meantime, he fathered a little girl, now four years old. He lives with his new lady friend a few dozen kilometers outside of Rang Chausse Gros (Quebec), remaining as ever close to his beloved trees, water and earth.

His constructions have not stood up against abandonment and storms; Mario del Curto's latest photographs testify to their present-day decrepitude. "Of the houses, with the exception of the first of them, La Cabane à sucre (the sugar cabin), not a single one remains standing. One of my favorites, La Cathédrale, has been erased as might a clumsy pencil stroke from a sheet of paper. The most imposing of them, Les Trois Petits Cochons (the three little pigs) has caved in altogether; only its west wing, left exposed to bad weather, remains. La Maison ronde (the round house) is in the throes of death, barely standing, its guts drooping into its belly. The rest of them lie about like so many grounded boats. The poetry pathway has become the pathway of grief—more for me, it would seem, than for Richard. Nevertheless, he did not wish to accompany me." (Mario del Curto)

The rediscovery of a site at St Romain la Motte near Roanne (department of Loire, central France)

10.08.2013
It was Pierre Martelanche, a Loire region humanist and wine grower, who created this site early in the 20th century. Fashioned out of clay, the site's allegorical figures, columns, towers, and bas-reliefs are so many love declarations to the Republic, to human rights, to secularism and to progress.
Marteleche was rejected by his contemporaries, who considered him "mad" throughout his lifetime.

Marteleche was rejected by his contemporaries, who considered him "mad" throughout his lifetime.

It was in June 2011, when the writer-traveller Jean-Yves Loude had taken up a literary residency upon invitation by the communes of the Côte Roannaise, that several of the sculptor's descendants brought the existence of this hidden museum to Mr. Loude's attention.
Fully aware of the value of Martelanche's oeuvre, the municipality of Saint-Romain-la-Motte lost no time in acquiring a former farm outbuilding, in the heart of the village, in order to host this unique heritage, facilitate its rehabilitation and speed up its accessibility for the public at large. By the same token, the discovery is being integrated into an overall cultural and social events program.

The association Friends of Pierre Martelanche's Petit Musée has launched a funding campaign to save and restore the terracotta pieces.

The textile works of Judith Scott are endowed with an intense power of expression: they resemble giant multicolored cocoons and are also reminiscent of voodoo dolls. Above all, they bring to mind magical fetishes and seem to hold a special connection to life and death. These sculptures conceal a secret that their author always took great care to hide.

At the end of the lecture, there will be a screening of a documentary film (36 minutes) on Judith Scott  made by Philippe Lespinasse and produced by the Collection de l'Art Brut.

The study presented by Baptiste Brun — "From the common man to Art Brut: Primitivism in its worst light in the oeuvre of Jean Dubuffet from 1944 thru 1951" — highlights the relations between Jean Dubuffet's work and the primitivist paradigm during the immediate post-war period. To do so, Mr. Brun considers Dubuffet's oeuvre as a whole (his paintings, writings, and Art Brut canvassing) in correlation with the oeuvre of his contemporaries (Bachelard, Bataille, Ponge, ethnological practices of the day, etc). The criticism of primitivism at the time, which Dubuffet himself carried out, entailed due consideration of the critical efficiency of the contemporaneous Art Brut reviews. This research project, directed by Thierry Dufrêne (Paris-Ouest Nanterre), also falls under the aegis of a thesis for the Ecole du Louvre. Composing the jury for this thesis are Laurence Bertrand-Dorléac (Science Po), Daniel Fabre (EHESS), Dominique Jarrassé (Bordeaux 2 - Ecole du Louvre) et Daniel J. Sherman (Chapel Hill, North Carolina).

The Collection de l'Art Brut's Stand on Creators: an interview with Sarah Lombardi

12.06.2013
For his master's thesis at the Ecole Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne (ECAL), Nicolas Pahlish interviews Sarah Lombardi.
The Collection de l'Art Brut follows strict lines that bring to the fore the fact that Art Brut creators should not in principle stem from any cultural channel (art gallery, museum) whatsoever. In this interview, Sarah Lombardi defines the institution's position with respect to such creators and brings to light a certain number of paradoxes.

They will speak upon the occasion of  a day devoted to dreams at the University of Lausanne, Institut de Psychologie, in the Bâtiment Geopolis, on April 30th at 10am

Dreams can be considered as go-betweens, straddling  the nocturnal and diurnal worlds, the Subconscious and the Conscious. As such, we might think of them as a main focus point in the process of artistic creation, as seen in the works of the creators themselves and, also, in the words of those called upon to comment on them and explain their underlying process—most especially, art historians and psychoanalysts. Seen in this light, creation can be likened to a laboratory providing access to processes leading to dreams and their developments in our psychological life and, beyond that,  to their translation into artistic production. This is what we shall endeavor to show in our two-voice approach to the oeuvre of the Art Brut creators Guo Fengyi and Ataa Oko.

Hans Steck (1891-1980), a Swiss psychiatrist and professor of medicine, took great interest in the creations produced by his patients, specially by those at the Psychiatric Hospital of Cery, where he began working in 1920, and where he was later (1936) appointed director. He played a major role in the discovery of the oeuvre of Aloïse, a patient confined to La Rosière (Gimel) , an annex of Cery. It was the visual quality of Aloïse's work, its esthetic impact, that Hans Steck came to appreciate in her production.

"La Manie épistolaire" : Vincent Capt defends his thesis at the University of Paris 8

04.05.2012
Under the title La Manie épistolaire [a mania for letter-writing], Vincent Capt will be defending his thesis on May 4, at the University of Paris 8. His subject matter comprises an analysis of the text and poetics of letters written by patients of psychiatric institutions and preserved at the Collection de l'Art Brut.
His work addresses the conditions underlying a dialogue with insanity: the transition from a mania (where form equals symptom) to a manner where form is so individualized that it drives us up the wall— that is, it muddles our conventional reading categories (linguistic signs, type of discourse...), highlighting our linguistic ethnocentrism and shifting insanity into society.
Research directors : Gérard Dessons (Paris 8) and Jean-Michel Adam (Lausanne).
