About 200 artworks from the historical collection at the American Folk Art Museum, New York (USA)

The Collection de l'Art Brut lends about 200 artworks from its historical collection to the American Folk Art Museum for the exhibition Art Brut in America: The Incursion of Jean Dubuffet.
This exhibition weaves through two unexplored yet seminal occurrences in art history: between 1952 and 1962, 1,200 works from Dubuffet’s collection were displayed in the private residence of artist and collector Alfonso Ossorio in East Hampton, New York—an epicenter for the artistic community associated with abstract expressionism; and in 1951, Dubuffet delivered the provocative speech “Anticultural Positions” at the Arts Club of Chicago.

The exhibition revisits the initial collection’s tenure in America, the dissemination of Dubuffet’s ideas, and the strengthening of a field devoted to self-taught artists. It introduces both little-known and canonical art brut artists, such as Auguste Forestier, Henrich Anton Müller, Francis Palanc, Jeanne Tripier, and Adolf Wölfli.
