Thoma, Johann,

(1875 – 1948), Switzerland

Biography

We know virtually nothing regarding the life of Johann Thoma (1875–1948) except that he was Swiss and lived in Zurich. The predominant feature of his large number of paintings is their esoteric, symbolist flavour in the best tradition of the early twentieth-century Anthroposophists. His work is accompanied by writings in which the author presents his art as follows: ‘They express the oscillations and vibrations of the soul of a man who has matured through life’s struggles. His creative thoughts have provided him with a reassuring vision. He invites his peers to persevere and to believe in the soul’s struggle to perceive the light’s power right until the final victory.’
