Art Brut artist Richard Smith passed away

The Collection de l'Art Brut was saddened to learn of the death of British Art Brut artist Richard Smith on 17 January.

In the late nineties, Richard Smith turned his full attention to his artistic activity, producing a large number of drawings, paintings, sculptures and assemblages from salvaged materials such as paper, wood and metal. His works depict entangled figures and faces, evidence of a rich and strange inner world.

The Lausanne museum owns 13 works by this artist in its collections, and he came to Lausanne for the "Acquisitions 2012-2018" exhibition from 8 June 2018 to 3 March 2019. On that occasion, three of his painted wood sculptures were exhibited.
